I might look into that USB PCI card. I do have a 1TB LaCie Quadra whose sole reason for being is to be my Time Machine target. That is working great so far. I'll be talking about the Quadra in an upcoming post, one of the better technology investments I've made to date.

Nah, USB1.0 will be dog slow even for an iPhoto library. You could however invest 10$ in a PCI USB 2.0 card from ebay and voila : transfer speed problem solved.

The P3 will be more then powerful enough to handle sharing a single drive.

Portability will still remain a problem and i think using a sparse volume is still your best bet right now if you wanna keep your photos with you. In that case, i reccomend an external TimeMahine drive or TM compatible NAS just in case the internal drive decides to give up its ghost one day.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm relying on Linksys' compatibility chart, as I didn't want to fork out for a 610n and not have it work.

As for the FreeNAS idea, I have an old POS PIII 1000 lying around, only problem is the USB 1.0 connectors. The internal drive is 40 GB, so maybe that can prove sufficient for iPhoto repository. The only downside to any external solution is that the laptop becomes disconnected from its data when you travel. Maybe an internal 500 GB - 1TB drive may prove to ultimately be my solution.

Great suggestions!

"I’m thinking that maybe a wifi solution to attach the external drive might work. The Linksys WRT610N, only supports XP/Vista for USB hard drive connection. So that’s a non-starter."

Not sure how that is a problem because the WRT610N should be able to share a FAT32 formatted drive over SMB and OS X comes with Samba build in, thus allowing you to access the drive in question that is attached to the WRT610N router.

Of course the WRT610N + HD costs quite a bit of dough so I'll suggest a much better alternative : a FreeNAS box.

What's needed :

-spare old POS computer or whatever you can find in a dumpster that has a P3 or better in it and still runs.
- an HD (or more depending how many you can lay your hands on)
- a copy of the latest stable release of FreeNAS (.69 at time of this post)

Once FreeNAS is up and running (their website has a GREAT tutorial on how to get it up and running), it includes a DAAP service. What this does is that it will scan the HD for any and all MP3 file and it will share it as a DAAP share (iTunes music share) that you will be able to access from iTunes or any other app that knows about it. The service can be programmed to periodically scan the HD for updated files so you won't have to do anything on your end in terms of management. Or at least i think so.

Just a few suggestions :)

Great post btw,
