xkcd: I Don’t Want Directions: “Sadly this happens to us far more often than we would like it. “ Also this should give Steve’s TomTom Go 720 review a new set of legs for another 6 months. “Jamais Deux Sans Trois” is a french expression meaning that events always happen in threes. And usually it’s associated with bad luck. And of course this perfectly sums up the past couple of weeks worth of tech disasters. It pretty much all started when I went on a cross-country ski trip a few weeks back. I had been taking some pictures of the frozen lake and the kids playing in the cabin and after placing the camera in the bag but not zipping it up, I decide to move the bag to a safer place than the coffee table. Big mistake, of course and with my nice Pentax 75-300mm lens mounted and the extra weight of the battery grip attached, the camera slipped out of the bag and crashed lens first onto the solid wood floor. Everyone heard the shattering of glass and the loud thud of the camera body… The log cabin suddenly became very quiet and as I took a deep breath and picked up the camera to inspect the inevitable damage, I was relieved to find out that it was the glass from the UV filter that has shattered and that the lens appeared to be intact. In fact, after further inspection the only real damage was the filter ring was now lodged into the lens thread and would have to be removed with some special tools. There was no way I was going to take a vice-grip to it and risk damaging the ring forever and even worse having the tool slip and scratch the actual lens. So I bit the bullet, and took to my local photo shop, Photoco, and they sent it their pro who will remove the ring and clean up the lens for just over $40 CAD. Nearly Live from the Wendyhouse Studios of Valois Bay… So I’m not the only one having a bad week… Join us this week as we revisit a few of our favourite issues like Steph’s crappy HP phone, my busted up GPS unit and the joys of traveling by air. Dads on this week’s [...] I cleared my inbox and tasks this morning to download the much touted 4.7.0.148 update for the BlackBerry Storm and try to rekindle my love affair with the BlackBerry again. Lately, I’ve been getting that 7 year itch feeling whenever I use the Storm. The younger smartphones like the iPhone are suddenly looking really sexy and have recently become all grown up devices that makes an experienced user like me think that I might be missing out on something. But then there’s the MILF of all smartphones just around the corner, the Palm PRE, and you know that hooking up with this one again could be just like old times except that now the old cougar has so many more moves and is looking pretty damn good in that skinny little black number. So then, why would you want to stick it with the old faithful, apart from merely prolonging this antagonizing sexual innuendo, because after all these years you’ve really come to know each other and you know you’ll be able to rely on it. Let me explain… |
