Before I even get started with this, let me just that this hands on review will not rival John Siracusa’s in depth analysis of the latest flavour of Mac OS X. If you need that much detail, please go ahead and read his article here.

It’s no secret that most of the Fat Dads are Mac users, some from days of old and some are recent switchers. For anyone who is keeping count, we’re up to 18 switchers so far, including one family who bought 3, then equipped the office with 6 more. But before you start calling us Fan Boys, we’ve all been long times Windows users, most of us since the DOS and 3.1 days so we have a pretty good idea of what else is out there. For me the tipping point was the first slick white MacBook to run an Intel Core Duo chip. That thing had more computing power in a smaller case then anything out there and it wasn’t running Vista, the fact that I could in fact run XP in VMWare was a little insurance policy for me. The more that Vista continued to suck in monumental levels the more the other dads jumped on board the Apple cart.

I’ll also admit that I got on board with an already pretty stable and feature rich version of Mac OS X in Tiger’s 10.4 and did not have to suffer the same troubles and  woes that the Panther and Jaguar users did. And It should be no surprise to anyone picking up a brand new unibody MacBook Pro that their computer is running an incredibly well refined operating system that has been 10 years in the making. But what does it mean for the rest of us that have upgraded every couple of years. Is Snow Leopard really worth the $29USD ($35CAD) outlay or is it just a service pack Snow Job as Leo Laporte put it. Well the short answer is Yes, for both questions.

RIM & Bell Update the BlackBerry Storm to v4.7.0.148 (Rel. 203)

BB Storm with the 148 update

I cleared my inbox and tasks this morning to download the much touted 4.7.0.148 update for the BlackBerry Storm and try to rekindle my love affair with the BlackBerry again. Lately, I’ve been getting that 7 year itch feeling whenever I use the Storm. The younger smartphones like the iPhone are suddenly looking really sexy and have recently become all grown up devices that makes an experienced user like me think that I might be missing out on something. But then there’s the MILF of all smartphones just around the corner, the Palm PRE, and you know that hooking up with this one again could be just like old times except that now the old cougar has so many more moves and is looking pretty damn good in that skinny little black number. So then, why would you want to stick it with the old faithful, apart from merely prolonging this antagonizing sexual innuendo, because after all these years you’ve really come to know each other and you know you’ll be able to rely on it.  Let me explain…

The Dadcast Goes into Pre Beta

DadCasting Rig

We recently started toying with the idea of putting together a DadCast, a 2FatDads podcast, so I dusted off the old mic stand and put away my reels of spliced tape and decided to put WireTap Pro to the test of recording a Skype conference call between three or more of the Fat Dads. Unfortunately I made a few mistakes in the set up.

  1. The first being that I recorded all Mac audio  in WireTap and not just the Skype call.
  2. The second problem was that I should never have routed the Mac audio out of the Mac into one of the board channels and then feed the whole board back into the  Mac’s line in.

Road to OTA Digital TV – Step ONE

OTA HDTV - Step One

A while back, YULBlogger, Laurent Lasalle posted an excellent heads up guide to getting Digital and HDTV Over The Air. The Brits call it Free to View or Free to Air and the Americans still don’t know what to do with it even though their cut over deadline came and went, but got pushed over a bit by the Big O in Office. One thing is for sure is that my recent issues with my Bell TV == FAILED service pushed my conversion plan a little forward.

Kopi Luwak Coffee: $h!t , That’s Good Coffee!

This is by far the coolest coffee in the world! In fact, I tell just about everyone I meet about Kopi Luwak coffee and no one ever believes me until I email them the Wiki link. It’s amazing that the Royal Family and Oprah would pay $65 a cup to drink something that [...]
