My fellow fat dad @JohhnyCannuck has been an avid fan of Doctor Who since the early 80’s (as far as I can remember). I tried many a time to get into the show when it was shown on weekends on the PBS channel. Even with the talent of Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker, I just couldnt get into the show. It didn’t have the Sci-Fi vibe I liked. I was into Battlestar Galactica with its space fights an cool spaceships. Even the bad guys (Cylons) were more scary in the old BSG than the daleks or Cybermen.
Move forward to 2005 and the revival of Doctor Who. Again my fellow fat dad urges me to watch the first 2 episodes. From the beginning, the show was different: better sets, the actors were more in-tune with the time, the revised Tardis and the phenomenal and enticing performance of Christopher Eccleston (not to mention the pretty Companion Rose played by Billie Piper). Fortunately for me, I got hooked right away.
The warm fall weather helped me continue my planning of building my skating rink; in essence it helped me procrastinate a little longer than I should the work that needed to be done to get my rink ready.
Now here we are, 1 week before Xmas and my rink is actually well underway and basically ready to be used by the kids. I can sense in advance your eager eyes asking me how did I get to this point, what did I learn and what made me swear ? Have I lost a finger or any other digit to frostbite?
I’ve decided to host the Canadiens for a game this season… Ok, so maybe the neighbourhood kids are better than the Canadiens and they deserve a place to play that mom can approve of. I’ve got the room, I’ve got the hose, I’ve even got the flood lights, all I need now is the plastic film and some really cold weather…. maybe I should post this one later when people are hating the fall and getting closer to the ever-short Xmas holidays (or for the non-denominational people out there, the late December vacations from work).
My plan is to get a 10′x100′ plastic film, cut it in two and make a 20′x50′ rink… I think my yard is big enough; worse case, I’ll knock down the neighbours fence and give him the opportunity to join in the fun!
I’ll keep you posted on my success/lessons learned. Stay tuned!
A friend dropped of his Windows XP laptop with a virus on it. Been trying to get him back up an running all week. Looks like a clean re-install is the only solution.
Somedays, I feel like such a plumber! Funny that I don’t get paid half as well as one though.
(Thanks to Stuart001UK for the find and the smile.)
