Montreal band Metric Launch the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant

Metric @ Union Station Samsung Vibrant Launch

Montreal based indie band Metric headlined a free open air concert for the Samsung launch of the Galaxy S Vibrant last night outside Toronto Union Station.

So after leaving my afternoon meeting in downtown Toronto last night, I decided to check out Foursquare for good pubs nearby and noticed that 40 people were trending at “Metric @ Union Station”, a quick Twitter search revealed that they were in fact going to be playing in front of Union Station right under the CN Tower. So I headed back to the hotel to put on some better walking shoes and a fresh shirt and then grabbed my camera and headed down to Union Station just a short walk down Yonge Street and past the past the Hockey Hall of Fame. The closer I got, they more and more people were ogling their phones and muttering about Union Station. I could definitely feel that a Swarm badge would be coming to many of these phones as they turned  on to  Front Street and got a glimpse of the Samsung stage sitting under the huge shadow of the CN tower. You couldn’t have picked a better venue for a street concert.

By the time I made my way to union station there were at least 500 hipsters and young professionals spilling onto the street and within seconds the concert was suddenly the biggest thing trending on Foursquare in the downtown Toronto area. There were orange polo shirt Samsung folk walking around and showing off the new Galaxy S Vibrant to anyone who would care to look. It is a pretty decent Android 2.1 device, why it isn’t running 2.2 Froyo yet I really don’t understand, but it was a very fast device and the video quality was quite remarkable. The Galaxy S is by far the best attempt of an iPhone “Clone” that I have seen so far. And to be fair to Samsung, they have made huge strides at getting up to speed on their smartphone line. The original Galaxy only ran 1.6 and was a really slow device. The Omnia II was a huge leap forward but relied on Windows Mobile for its OS so you still need a stylus and occasionally had to fiddle around in the start menu to get things to work. The Galaxy S Vibrant is a huge step forwards and hopefully a real winner for them, they sure do through a good party, it’s a shame that hardly any of the phones in the crowd taking pics and recording clip for YouTube were Samsung. The iPhone count still eclipsed any other brand in the crowd including BlackBerries.

Hand over your wallets! I’ve got an iPhone and you’re gonna buy it!!!

So Apple has generously reminded us that the latest saviour of our high-tech (un-American) soul goes on sale this Friday (our southern brethren were saved earlier in the year).

iPhone 4

iPhone 4 in black

And the usual tipsters have done a wonderful job digging up the non-deal-with-the-devil (or unlocked) prices. Thanks to the CBC we know that the 16 GB model will retail for about $680 while the 32 GB model will retail for about $790. To me that seems like a lot of money to pay for a phone (it’s still a phone right? We don’t have to download that app separately yet do we?!).

Apple Doesn’t Announce the Magic Trackpad and Still Trends Worldwide

Apple's Amgic Trackpad

trackpad trending.pngSo Apple very quietly refreshed its desktop line this morning, the iMacs are faster, the Mac Pro now has 12 cores and displays were refreshed a little too. You can read all about that on Engadget and all the other Tech Blogs. Oh and they also released something called the Magic Trackpad: a slick aluminum track pad slab that already 80% bigger than the current 4×3 inch MacBook Pro trackpad. So it’s roughly the same size, in height, as the Bluetooth keyboard. It’s very cool looking and of course I already want one.

We are deeply sorry – Steve Jobs Aplogizes and Hands Out Freebies

To our customers who are affected by the issue, we are deeply sorry, and we are going to give you a free case or a full refund.

This is basically how Steve Jobs laid it out to the press corps that attended the Cupertino invite this morning. After admitting that signal loss form holding any smartphone devices IS in fact a more common problem then we are aware of, Steve basically went for the mea culpa and said they did in fact know there was a slight issue in testing but as everyone had bought cases with the iPhone 3GS they didn’t think it would be a big issue. Since the phone launched 22 day ago, Apple or At&T have yet to see a dramatic increase in dropped calls but felt it was time to put this Antennagate to rest and settle the issue. And yes he did use the word: Antennagate.

There are some things we know that we did learn here. One thing is how much we love our customers and how we are going to take care of them. We were stunned and upset and embarrassed by the Consumer Reports stuff, and the reason we didn’t say more is because we didn’t know enough. If we’d have done this event a week and a half ago, we wouldn’t have had half the data we have today.

Throughout the short 15 minute statement, one thing that Steve made very clear was how much Apple loves its customer and has been working their collective butts off trying to make the best iPhone possible and to solve this issue as quickly as possible.

AT&T won’t give out the absolute call drop data for competitive reasons, but they’ll let us release the delta. But how do the call drops on iPhone 4 compare to 3GS a year ago per 100 calls? I can tell you that since we’re being totally transparent, even though we believe the iPhone’s antenna is superior, the data says the iPhone 4 drops more calls than the 3GS. But how many more calls per hundred does it drop? Again, listening to ‘Antennagate’ on the web, it must be dropping many more calls! The iPhone 4 drops less than ONE call per hundred than the 3GS. Less than one.

Another vibe that very quickly became apparent was that Apple was not very happy with the amount of bad press they have been getting for a fairly common issue. Truth be told, even I was a little shocked by Apple expectation of being treated like everyone else. Would Ferrari want to be judged with the same criteria and road tests as the Chevy Craptastic? Does Tag or Rolex sell themselves with the same feature list as Timex? They have very much created this niche of excellence in everything they touch and neither the press nor the public will ever want to hold them accountable to the same standards of cheap Samsung and LG phone.

We’re an engineering company, we think like engineers, and we think it’s the right way to solve real, hard problems. I don’t think the fact that we love our customers is going to change at all. I don’t think we could run any faster — we’ve had cots in the labs, cars in the parking lots all night, we’ve been living here.

I guess it’s just human nature, when you see someone get successful you just want to tear it down. I see it happening with Google. Google is a great company. Look at everything they’ve created. Would you prefer we’re Korean companies? Do you not like the fact that we’re an American company leading the world right here? Of course we’re human, of course we’ll make mistakes. But sometimes I feel that in search of eyeballs for these web sites, people don’t care about what they leave in their wake.

In the end, Apple does in fact have an issue with its brand new iPhone 4, which is still the best phone on the market and the most innovative user experience I have ever had on any mobile device. So today, they tried in there very best and almost arrogant way to make things right. Steve apologized, Apple is handing out free cases and offering full refunds without restocking fees and yes At&T will allow customers to cancel contracts. No news as to what Rogers, Bell or Telus will do but it probably will somehow tow the same line. Will I be buying an iPhone 4, truth is, I only just my 3GS and the iPS 4.01 is working very nicely for me? So, probably not. Will I ever buy another iPhone? Of course I will, after using a Palm, Blackberry and Droid, nothing compares the user experience on the iPhone.

[UPDATE] Apple has posted the video of the entire press conference online here

Also, this took a lot of balls to play at the beginning of the Event

Camera+ for the iPhone: Pure Clickety Goodness

Camera+.jpgWhen my fellow Canuck and shutterbug, Lisa Bettany, teamed up for with the TapTapTap guys to make Camera+ (iTunes link) I was a little curious but also a little wary. I thought to myself, here we go again, another photographer renowned for usually sporting a Canon 5D MkII touting the merits of the iPhone’s camera. Sure we’ve all heard the old saying: “the Best camera is the one you have with you”. And while that’s certainly true, I’ve always used the saying as a reason to lug my Pentax K200d SLR around with me everywhere I go, going so far as buying three separate camera bags for various occasions and adopting a huge MEC Brenta courier as my every laptop bag. But when I decided to abandon the BlackBerry and finally get an iPhone, things started to change.

The BEST camera is the ONE you have with you.
